The Suzuki Jimny re badged as the Mazda AZ-Offroad was available in Japan from at least 1998-2013. I just sent an email to Mazda USA asking if the new 2019 model will be available in the US in 2019 or 2020. Lets bombard them with requests. The U.S. loves its little Jeeps, so if we convince them we are doing them and us a favor.
I think the 1.5 Skyactiv-G would work quite well in the Jimny to meet US EPA emissions.

The new version is supposed
to have active front and side airbags to meet ANCAP in Australia, so I think it will meet requirements, it will likely
not be great, but it should pass.

its a lot more than just having airbags. A nd its more than just passing the crash test, there are compliance issues at play. a good example would be having a backup camera is now mandatory .

Everybody has backup cameras. Suzuki calls them “Rear parking cameras” on their UK website,
and they have 2 different auto braking systems one is radar based and the other is dual camera based.

its just an example. there are things like center mounted high stop light, or bumper height regs, etc, etc. Lots of little changes that would add up to it being unprofitable for them to change it. Not to mention it would have to be BUILT here to skirt the chicken tax.

Ah you are right about the Chicken tax. If I remember correctly it applies to 3 door SUVs but not 4 door SUVs.
